The structured cabling standards that actually affect your project
Standards documents are long and expensive. Here is what the three that matter most actually require of an installation.
TIA-568: the cabling itself
Defines the channel and permanent link, the 90-meter horizontal limit, pin-out (T568A/B), bend radius, support spacing and performance categories. It is why a drop is tested as a permanent link and why a properly installed run has a service loop, not a kink.
TIA-606: labeling and administration
Defines a consistent identifier scheme for spaces, pathways, cables and hardware, and the records that go with them. In practice: every panel port, every faceplate and every backbone strand carries a machine-printed label that matches a schedule you receive at closeout.
TIA-607: bonding and grounding
Defines the telecom bonding backbone, the busbars and the conductor sizing that ties racks and cable shields to building ground. Skipped grounding is invisible until it is a noise problem or a lightning event.
What to require in your bid documents
Ask for these explicitly and the low bid stops hiding scope.
- Permanent-link test results for 100% of drops, delivered as a native tester file
- TIA-606 labeling with an as-built port-to-room schedule
- Rack bonding to the telecom grounding busbar
- Abandoned cable removal per NEC 800.25
- Firestopping restored at every rated penetration
