Cat6 vs Cat6A: which one should you actually install?

The two categories look identical on a floor plan and behave very differently over a fifteen-year building life.

The technical difference in one paragraph

Both are four-pair twisted copper. Cat6 supports 1 Gbps to 100 meters and 10 Gbps to roughly 55 meters in good conditions. Cat6A adds tighter twist rates, thicker insulation and often a separator or shield to control alien crosstalk, delivering 10 Gbps across the full 100-meter channel. Cat6A is also physically larger and less flexible, which affects pathway fill and bend radius.

PoE heat is the underrated factor

As PoE budgets climbed to 60W and 90W, bundle temperature rise became a real design constraint. Larger conductors in Cat6A dissipate heat better and lose less voltage over distance, which is why access points, PTZ cameras and powered devices at the end of long runs benefit from it regardless of bandwidth need.

A practical rule per drop type

Mix categories where it saves money without creating a future re-pull.

  • Wireless access points, cameras, and any run over 55 m: Cat6A
  • Standard desk, classroom and printer drops under 55 m: Cat6
  • Anything inside an equipment room or between racks: Cat6A patching is cheap insurance
  • Owner plans to hold the building 10+ years: Cat6A everywhere is usually the cheaper decision

Cost reality

Cat6A material runs meaningfully higher per foot and needs larger pathways, but material is the minority of an installed drop's cost. Labor to pull a second cable later — through occupied ceilings, after hours — costs far more than the upgrade did.
